Milestone boudoir photography:
Josephine celebrating her strength
Milestone boudoir photography: Josephine celebrating her strength
As women, we all struggle at times with feeling ‘enough’. It’s the quiet voice that tries to hold us back, telling stories like ‘you’re too old,’ ‘you’ll feel awkward,’ or ‘maybe someday when…’
Now imagine looking at a powerful, tasteful, artistic portrait of yourself, and that voice going completely quiet. Because the woman staring back at you is so strong and soft and radiant and so unmistakably YOU. And in an instant, you recognise her completely.
This is Josephine’s story.
She didn’t wait to feel ‘perfect’
The women who walk through our doors rarely arrive feeling completely confident. Like many of our guests, Josephine’s boudoir photoshoot was at a time when she wasn’t feeling at her physical best. Despite the initial nerves, she didn’t let the pressure of needing to feel ‘perfect’ hold her back.
Josephine is a competitive bodybuilder who started the sport relatively late, in her late 30s. When she booked her boudoir photoshoot with us, she’d just finished her competition season. For her, the end of the competition season brings a big shift in how she feels.
“It’s weird because you still want to feel proud of the hard work you put in all those months (often years) prior to the stage, but when the abs and shreds disappear, the body fat returns and you start to feel lost and sometimes unworthy in your own skin.”
For many of us, the measure of how we feel may not come from bodybuilding. Maybe it’s postpartum. Maybe it’s ageing. Maybe it’s just life doing what life does to our bodies over the years. But that feeling of not quite recognising yourself and feeling not quite comfortable in your skin? Most women know the feeling.
Here’s the powerful part. Instead of waiting until she felt ‘ready’ (spoiler: there’s no such thing), Josephine chose to celebrate the body she actually lives in every day.
“A body with cellulite, wrinkles and loads of grey hair. But it was my body and I live in her. I felt it was important to capture the phase of me that exists every day, after the glitz and peak of comp season. I wanted to honour the off-stage me in that fullness of strength.”
This is what milestone boudoir photography is really about. Not the version of you that existed five years ago. Not the version you’re hoping shows up next year. The perfectly imperfect you that’s here right now. Honouring her, and believing she’s the one worth celebrating.
You're one of one
We asked Josephine what she’d say to women in their 40s, 50s and beyond who feel nervous about doing something like this.
“You deserve to see yourself through the eyes of an artist. To be captured and shown who you are is an experience you’ll always cherish. You’re one of one, so ignore the voices that hold you back. People will always judge, who cares? They aren’t you.”
Did you hear that? There’s never been and will never be another you. Not your body, not your story, not your strength. All of it is yours alone. And every single bit of it deserves to be seen and celebrated, not hidden away until some imaginary ‘perfect’ time arrives.
She also wanted you to know that you’ll feel a lot more comfortable and have more fun than you expect.
“There’s no judgement from behind the lens. There’s no rigid script or mandatory poses making you feel super awkward or weird. You’ll be guided to be and feel your best. The photographers are artists and I loved that at Verve, my vision could be shared and understood. (That pre-shoot briefing process was brilliant btw!)”
The moment that changes everything
And now for the moment we live for at Verve – Josephine’s private image reveal viewing. Seeing her stunning boudoir photography images for the first time, Josephine was speechless. But at the same time, it felt like coming home to herself.
“Looking at the images, I felt really shy at first. It’s always a bit confronting even when the photos are so incredible and well-presented. There’s this sense of wonder like, ‘Who is that? Is that really me?’
“Personally, it was very cathartic to be captured in a way that felt true to myself and all that I’d come through. I wanted to cry.”
This is the most powerful and emotional moment of many of our guests’ experience with us. To see yourself with this sense of wonder – ‘is this me?’ – but also, of recognition. Because yes, of course that IS you!
The real, powerful you. Exactly as the rest of the world sees you. Strong, beautiful, radiant.
And don’t you, of all people, deserve to see it too?
Seeing herself through an artist’s eyes
One of the most special aspects for Josephine was the professionalism and artistry of the photographers. And the feeling of self-expression.
“No janky AI tool or blurry selfie mode or desperate face filter thingy can compare to real artistry by professionals who understand how to operate a camera and work with light.”
“When you’re in a studio, present in that shared space, there’s nothing to distract you. Your busy brain gets a break and for once, you get the opportunity to be fully unguarded, express yourself, and make something brand new.”
As women, so often we feel like we spend every minute of every day running on overdrive for everyone else, leaving our own needs to last. If that sounds like you, a boudoir photoshoot can be a unique and special way to reconnect with who you are outside of those roles that consume so much of our daily energy and focus. After all, you’re still you underneath all that.
Many guests tell us that this experience helped them feel more confident and empowered in every part of their lives.
Something real to hold onto
Josephine’s portraits were planned as a romantic gift for her husband. But the experience also felt like a gift for herself.
“This particular photoshoot hit different because there was no stage, no rush, no other athletes in the room, no group photos, no theme-wear. Creating these images in the quiet calm of the studio took the pressure off and allowed me to focus on my husband as the only audience. And he’s a big reason why I’m always smiling the way I do.”
After viewing her portraits, Josephine chose to have her favourite images printed as artwork and presented in a handcrafted box.
“It will always be held and treasured in a way that a digital only one simply cannot match. With everything being happy-snapped and dumped online these days, our photo cameras cluttering image libraries with junk (I’m guilty of this), it’s refreshing to have proper, high quality tangible photographs of a subject that will always captivate because it is you.”
This is your sign
Whatever milestone you’re thinking about right now – a birthday, a comeback, a reinvention, or just a random day you decided you’re finished shrinking yourself – this experience is your moment to see yourself through new eyes.
Josephine walked in feeling nervous. Wondering whether her powerful body, that has done extraordinary things, would look and feel ‘enough.’ She walked out with a whole new perspective. Feeling beautiful and powerful. Knowing every version of her is worth celebrating.
So this is your reminder, too. You’re one of one.
You’re already beautiful and strong, and SO worthy of seeing it for yourself.
Not ‘someday when…’ Right now.
Whatever your age, stage or story – when you’re ready, our supportive female photographers are ready for you.
